Métis Health and Human Resources Initiative Overview
This is a four year, $10-Million health human resource development initiative (HHRI) aimed at laying the foundation for longer term systemic change in the supply and demand for Métis health human resources. Your Governing Members are offering scholarships and bursaries to students interested in pursuing a career in one of 26 health related fields. HHRI is based upon a Health Canada plan dealing with Aboriginal healthcare issues. Métis National Council took the lead roll on behalf of our Governing Members and the MNC is currently researching other opportunities for developing human resource components working with Health Canada and other Aboriginal groups. We hope this is the first of many projects aimed at improving Health Care Delivery across the Métis Nation Homeland.

As the Métis National Council’s Minister of Health, it is my pleasure to introduce to the Métis
Nation, this exciting and rewarding Health Human Resources Initiative. The
Métis National Council and our Governing Members (Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia) are proud to partner with Health Canada in offering for the first time, health education scholarships and bursaries geared specifically for Métis. This is a $10 Million dollar, four-year initiative, which we are happy to say will help to meet many health care needs within our communities across the Métis Nation Homeland. Based on our best knowledge and understanding of population size, it is clear that there are not enough Métis working in the health care system. Our goals include creating a representative workforce which includes appropriate numbers of Métis nurses, physicians, physiotherapists, pharmacists, dentists, and other health system providers. Plus, this is a vital opportunity to provide conditions for optimizing the current and future supply, mix and distribution of the Métis health workforce in ways that are responsive to the unique and diverse health needs of Métis people. And this initiative will help us to achieve and maintain an adequate supply of qualified Métis health care providers who are appropriately educated, distributed, deployed and supported to ensure culturally competent and safe health care for Métis people. We also want to create an environment where Métis health care providers feel supported, connected and committed to Metis health. If you are interested in accessing a health education, one of our Governing Members may have a bursary or scholarship that might suit your need to help cover costs. This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity that begins by simply clicking on your Governing Member Organization logo below and filling in the necessary application forms. On behalf of myself, our Governing Members and the Métis National Council, good luck as you begin a new and healthy chapter in your life.

As Minister of Health, I am pleased to welcome
you to the Métis Health Human Resources
Initiative Web site.
Canada’s New Government is working hard to
improve the delivery of health services to First
Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples through
programs such as the Aboriginal Health Human
Resources Initiative. This initiative works with
various organizations, governments, and
institutions, including the Métis National Council,
to help First Nations, Inuit and Métis students
succeed in educational programs leading to careers
in the field of health.
Through support from Health Canada, the
Aboriginal Health Human Resources Initiative
provides bursaries and scholarships to First
Nations, Inuit, and Métis students pursuing studies
in the health care sector. Health Canada’s support
also assists the Métis National Council to develop
health human resource strategies that respond to
the unique needs and diversity among Métis
people. These strategies are designed to make the
health care system more responsive to the needs of
Métis people and increase the number of Métis
working in health-related fields.
There are great opportunities awaiting you in the
health sector in a wide range of careers. I
encourage you to explore this Web site to learn
more about the health-related bursaries and
scholarships being offered through the Métis
Health Human Resources Initiative.
On behalf of Canada’s New Government, I wish
the Métis National Council success in
implementing the Métis Health Human Resources
Initiative - and promoting successful and
rewarding careers in the health care sector.
